Medical Director - Greensboro, N.C.

 

Reporting to the Regional Medical Director, the Medical Director (M.D. or D.O) is integral to Quest Diagnostics’ vision of empowering better health with diagnostic insights. The position acts as the chief medical quality officer upholding high quality of laboratory testing. The Medical Director is passionate about providing medical direction, consultation, and guidance to all levels of the medical and laboratory staff and interacts with laboratory operations, quality assurance, logistics, patient services, customer solutions, accrediting/regulatory agencies, administrative officials, the medical industry, customers, and patients. The Medical Director regularly interfaces with executive level physicians and administrators in hospitals and health systems. The leader is an active participant in the discussion of strategy around business growth, medical quality and evolving customer needs toward improved healthcare. The Medical Director contributes to the business by ensuring the success of others through developing, motivating and coaching direct/indirect reports.

 

Responsibilities

The daily responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing consultations to clients about medical significance of laboratory data and results, and correlation of data to contribute toward Patient Care (diagnosis and patient management).

 

  • Be a medical resource for discussion with internal/external contacts. Evaluate Business Unit date using relevant tools together with the Business Unit Quality Improvement staff for client inquiry, unexpected test/population shifts.
  • Educate train the technical staff so they are equipped to discuss with clients and patients. Ensure competency is assessed for all employees, as required. Authorize in writing all individuals to perform their respective analytical and pre-analytical, and post analytical functions.
  • Ensure that appropriate, timely laboratory facility audits occur to ensure optical quality systems. Provide educational programs for the medical and laboratory staff and participate in Quest educational programs.
  • Participate in programs within the medical community (e.g., ASCP).
  • Research and Development Responsibilities. If appropriate, plan and direct research and development appropriate to the facility.
  • Plan/develop/direct the correct experimental design for problem-solving.
  • Become involved with BPT development, testing and validation of a new assay/service.
  • Participate in the development and execution of Quality Assurance and Improvement Plans.
  • Evaluate performance with staff and re-define using the external/internal systems/tools available (e.g., blind testing performance, Care360 Reports, Cognos, Datamart, InterLab QC, PBViews, Medical Report Reviews/Audits (internal/external), monthly QA/quality meetings, Positivity Rate Distribution Program (PRDP), Proficiency Testing Performance, Reportable Quality Incidents, Weekly/Monthly QC Review).
  • Assure enrollment in Proficiency Testing (PT) programs, and that PT is performed according to CLIA/CAP guidelines and develop alternative assessments where PT are unavailable. Assess failures and near-misses.
  • Serves as an active member of the business unit leadership team.
  • Develops community presence and external relationships. Leverage local and community involvement as a source of competitive advantage by proactively engaging with clients, partnering with Sales to market Quest Diagnostics' value proposition growth, and maintaining active involvement in one or more of the following: professional membership (ideally in a leadership capacity), publication, medical advocacy and public speaking.
  • Bring value to Quest Diagnostics through actions, competence, demeanor, relationships and communications.

Qualifications

  • Candidate must be a D. or D.O. Board Certified Pathologist with certification in Clinical Pathology and/or Clinical Pathology and Anatomic Pathology
  • 5 years Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Management is required
  • Must have or be able to obtain unrestricted medical licensure for the states covered by the Region
  • Ability to influence, develop relationships with key stakeholders and lead change
  • Strength responding to inquiries from clients, regulatory agencies or members of the community
